Planet Fitness opens new gym in Bloomfield Center Village
The village of Bloomfield has come a long way since its time as a mostly vacant lot. This is the newest addition? A place to burn those quarantine pounds.
Northville-based PF Michigan Group has opened its 52nd Planet Fitness franchise located in the mall on the Pontiac / Bloomfield Township border. Much of the center, located at 1935 S. Telegraph, has many features that most users would find at any other Planet Fitness, including cardio machines, weights, as well as locker rooms and a lounge. those who pay for the black card chain fitness.
“Functional training is definitely the most unique thing I have at my clubs,” said Samantha Markey, regional manager who oversees several Planet Fitness clubs in the area. “There is a lot of space, a lot of privacy, everything you need is there.”
The gymnasium, which opened on June 29, marks the last opening of the formerly troubled property along the Telegraph between Square Lake and Orchard Lake roads. The center remained vacant for several years after the announcement of another development project. It was acquired by Southfield-based REDICO in 2015, who then began working to develop the land.
Since that acquisition, the property has seen several businesses open on the site, including Menards, Aldi, and Henry Ford Health System, which opened a medical center on the property in late 2019. At least two new buildings – a Michigan Schools and Government Credit One Union branch and a Hampton Inn and Suites – are currently under construction in downtown.
Locating the gymnasium in the mall was a no-brainer for the company, said Mary Scott, chief marketing officer for PF Michigan Group.
“We always want our locations to be really convenient. It’s very important. So seeing this club here, I don’t think it’s really a surprise,” Scott said. “We have a lot of other things that are going to attract people to the area.”
Because it is a new construction, the gym contains a lot of state-of-the-art features, Markey said. This stretches from the practice area to the lounge for high performance members.
“The functional training room, the Black Card spa, is the most advanced equipment you can find in our franchise,” said Markey.

The 30,000 square foot gymnasium is the latest Planet Fitness to open in the area. PF Michigan Group operates several gyms in the area, including in Livonia, Plymouth, Garden City, Wayne, Milford and Novi, which opened at the Adell Center near Novi Road just before Christmas last year.
Markey said many people have signed up for the gym, which can be trickier during the summer months as many people train outside. She said they had asked members to switch gyms to the new one on Telegraph just for the sake of convenience.
“A lot of people come in and say, ‘My home club is somewhere else, but it’s just convenient for work or my home,’” said Markey.
More information about the gym, including how to register, can be found on the club’s website at planetfitness.com.
